Gender and autism

One may be able to spot out an autistic child/adult from a group of people.
And one will say out of 10 children, 2 are girls and 8 are boys.
I am sure the data is correct but I find girls who are diagnoised with autism are usually a little different from boys. For some, people cannot recognise the autism in a girl until they spend time and look very closely even.

Because most obvious autistic people are usually the male, most researches are done on boy and men to see how autism can be recognised and treated.
Then the result or the findings are used to understand autistic children/adult for all boys/men and girls/women. I read somewhere that this is not the best situation for girls since the male focused researches are just not fit enough for the females.

Girls function differently from boys = universal knowledge. Girls in general are social, more caring and more advanced than boys when it comes to communication and in any kinds of  relationships. This is also the case for most autistic girls.
Autistic girls may not be as communicative but they are usually more communicative than autistic boys and sometimes even want to be in groups of people and want attention and be accepted.

Keeping this in mind, I found another interesting article here.
And some good books to read if you need to learn about autistic girls :) here.

Personally, I have read Parenting Girls on the Autism Spectrum and I have to say this does open a whole new perspective. It's written for parents but any educators working with autism should have a read.
